DB2 CPU and Response Metrics
» 985.5 KiB - 2,325 hits - June 15, 2006
Presented by Ned Diehl-The Information Systems Manager, Inc.ned.diehl@perfman.com
DB2 requests originate from a variety of diverse sources including batch, CICS, DDF, and SAP. Related DB2 CPU usage can be recorded in RMF, DB2, SMF 30, and other subsystem records. Proper selection and interpretation of these values will vary with transaction source, DB2 environment, product levels, and analysis objectives. Analysts must be careful to include all desired values and avoid multiple counting of the same logical utilization. This paper will discuss the sources and analysis of DB2 CPU metrics and corresponding response times. Examples will include CICS, DDF, and SAP.

End to End Business Service Management
» 4.3 MiB - 805 hits - April 23, 2009
Aligning IT with Business, including End User Experience, is accomplished in a business climate with the following three items:
1) Business value - determined by the End User
2) Performance = the End User Experience.
3) Business and IT Views - graphically displayable from each perspective.
With these items, IT can identify and monitor its business services quality and able, on a real time basis, to adjust their quality level. Conversely, business is able to manage their end user services by alleviating the IT issues which negatively impact the bottom line. Let’s see how this is done. - Compuware

Adding value to performance management and capacity planning
Presented by Scott Chapman- American Electric Power
A Business Metrics Database, or BMDB, has the potential for adding significant value to an organization’s performance management and capacity planning processes. The BMDB needs to be flexible, extensible, and efficient. Reporting needs to be simple and easy to update as new metrics are added. This paper will present one possible BMDB design and discuss a simple web-based reporting architecture based on XML and JavaScript that could be extended to other applications as well. Potential sources for both the technical measures and business metrics of mainframe applications will be discussed.

Performance Monitoring for Today's IT - What is Nirvana?
» 2.4 MiB - 488 hits - June 15, 2006
Bill Johns
Performance monitoring has been around since the beginning of IT. Over time component level monitoring tools have been finely honed to provide technical experts with the measurements needed to keep elements of systems finely tuned. However, as IT becomes more closely aligned with business deliverables, IT performance monitoring needs are shifting to a more business oriented view. The purpose of this discussion is to identify the gaps in monitoring created by the evolution of IT and business and define the new needs of performance monitoring.

:FICON/FCP protocol intermix mode (PIM) in a common storage network has been supported by IBM since early 2003 yet has not seen widespread adoption among end users for a variety of reasons. Recent developments such as the new IBM System z10, Node Port Identifier Virtualization (NPIV), virtual fabrics, and advances in storage networking management make PIM a more compelling technological strategy for the end user to enable better utilization of capacity and operational cost savings.

:This paper describes the problem management process my company uses to investigate, classify, communicate and remediate the causes of service outages. Most outages have multiple addressable root causes; our process links these to the outage for analysis and assignment of multiple remediation actions. Root causes can also be analyzed independently, providing powerful trending metrics. The evolution of our problem management system is discussed, along with classification methods and items tracked. This process has proven to be very effective in eliminating repeat outages

Demystifying Extended Distance FICON (aka Persistent IU Pacing) by Dr. Steve Guendert - on May 12, 2011
In 2008 IBM announced IU pacing enhancements that allow customers to deploy z/OS Global Mirror (zGM) over long distances without a significant impact to performance. This is more commonly known by the marketing term Extended Distance FICON. The more technically accurate term as defined in the FC-SB3/4 standards is persistent IU pacing. How this functionality works, and what it actually does for the end user has remained a mystery, thanks in large part to the marketing term used. This paper/presentation will demystify how the technology works, and how it can benefit the end user.
