Abstract:
The IBM mainframe environment provides a wealth of performance metrics, but the exploitation of these metrics is often limited due to the expertise required to access and understand them. As a result, analysis and decisions can suffer from a lack of exploiting available metrics. This paper discusses the use of intranet-based technologies for greatly increasing the accessibility of performance metrics to a wider audience. It includes a consideration of the challenges of managing and presenting the data in ways that aid the analysis process.
Leveraging Virtualization for Data Center Optimization and Resilience

Abstract:
Virtualization and blade infrastructures are being used widely today for data center consolidation, saving floor space, reducing power consumption, and lowering TCO by raising the level of resource utilization across servers. Many companies today are also leveraging virtualization as cost effective solution for disaster recovery. In this session you will learn how to get the most out of your virtualization investment to optimize the data center through server consolidation and disaster recovery using state of the art software applications combined with technologies you are already using in your data center such as blade servers, virtualization infrastructures, and image or backup archives.
Visualization of Performance Data

Abstract:
This paper will describe some of the analysis and visualization techniques that the author has used in analyzing performance data from a variety of systems. Usage patterns provide information on what activities are being performed on the system, thus providing insight into what components of the system might be candidates for optimization. These techniques can also show what activities correlate to resource consumption, and this provides data for constructing performance models. The analysis and graphics were done using the R freeware package.
Designing and Managing FICON Inter-Switch Link Infrastructures

Abstract:
FICON Inter-Switch Links (ISLs) were created to provide a solution to the bandwidth requirements of complex parallel SYSPLEX environments. This paper will review basic ISL concepts, how they are defined using Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD), with emphasis on design principles for fault tolerance, and examine the measurement data available for performance management and capacity planning.
